On our glorious South coast of Cornwall you don’t usually get the big rollers (aka large waves) however there are some amazing beaches – all with their own charm, depending on what your looking for, tides and weather.
Portwrinkle /Finnygook Beach – (19 mins)
Great names eh? Well the beach is shingle one end and more sandy at the old harbour end, Hoodny Cover. This means you have a choice! It’s only a short walk down from the parking area, plus there is an excellent café – Silas Cove with coffee, cakes and tapas. Up to date beach info »
Seaton Beach (19 mins)
The main beach at Seaton consists of dark shingle & sand which makes this beach slightly less attractive, however not less popular with families, dogs and bbq’s! No doubt due to the fact that it’s easily accessed, has good facilities + the Smugglers Inn pub, Seaton Beach Café, and playground. If you walk along the beach it turns into Downderry beach, where there’s ‘The Inn on the Shore’ pub, boasting has fantastic views, or the highly rated Bewshea’s tapas bar and restaurant (28 mins). Dog friendly all year round.
Whitsand Bay, Sharrow & Tregantle Beach – (22 mins)
One of the most dramatic expanses of glorious golden sand can be found on Tregantle beach – at low tide this beach feels huge! Great for big walks, surfing and just relaxing. Remember to check online that the beach is open as at certain times the nearby military firing ranges are in use, if there’s a red flag up this means no access, so check first.
Sharrow (23 mins) – It’s a popular sandy cover that extends in the middle part of the 4 mile expanse of Whitsand bay. Both Sharrow and Freathy beaches have a bit of steep climb down (and up!) so it’s definitely not one for those physically challenged. There is a lifeguard lookout, however please be aware of dangerous currents.
Looe Beach (26 mins)
Looe is the most tourist-filled town nearby, so get there early! It’s popular due to the fact it’s a great sandy beach surrounded by an abundances of cafés, pubs and facilities. It’s a proper ‘bucket and spade’ – free from dogs beach (on the main beach – you can take your dog on the adjoining East Looe beach). Just hold onto your pasty/fish & chips or ice-creams firmly as the sea gulls are watching…
Polperro Beach (35 mins)
Very different from Looe, Polperro has a small sandy beach only visible at low tide! However you can opt for a dip in Chapel Pool and small tidal pool just along the cliff path. It’s a bit of a walk through the village from the (expensive) car park – so make a day of it! You can take the shuttle bus service from the car park to the harbour, however there are some great interesting shops, art galleries and pubs along the way, which are great to explore – you’re on holiday, take your time and enjoy this picturesque village.
